Propanediol – Palm-Free

Origin

Propanediol is a clear, water-soluble glycol produced through the fermentation of glucose derived from corn. The palm-free form used by AREUM is plant-based and created without petroleum-derived or palm-derived feedstocks.

Also known as 1,3-propanediol, it is a multifunctional cosmetic ingredient that can act as a humectant, solvent, emollient and sensory enhancer within water-based formulations.

How AREUM Uses It

We use Palm-Free Propanediol in Guardian Antioxidant Serum as part of its hydrating water phase.

It helps attract and retain moisture while also acting as a solvent and carrier, supporting the even distribution of Guardian’s botanical extracts and active ingredients. It contributes smoothness and slip to the serum, helping balance the naturally tackier feel that can come from glycerine and other humectants.

Propanediol can also help improve the performance of a carefully selected preservation system, although it is not used as a complete preservative on its own.

Why AREUM Chose Palm-Free Propanediol

We chose Propanediol because it provides hydration, formulation support and sensory refinement in a single lightweight ingredient. Its smooth, non-greasy texture helps Guardian glide easily across the skin and absorb comfortably without leaving a heavy or sticky finish, making it ideal for a serum designed to layer seamlessly under facial oils and moisturisers.

We specifically selected a palm-free form derived from fermented corn glucose. This allows for greater transparency around its origin while offering a plant-based alternative to glycols that may otherwise be derived from petroleum or less clearly defined vegetable sources.
