Sea Buckthorn CO₂ Extract – Organic

Origin

Sea Buckthorn CO₂ Extract is obtained from the crushed seeds of Hippophae rhamnoides, a hardy shrub known for its vivid orange berries. The certified organic extract used by AREUM is produced through supercritical carbon dioxide extraction, a process in which pressurised CO₂ behaves partly like a liquid and partly like a gas, allowing it to draw the oil-soluble compounds from the seeds. Once extraction is complete, the carbon dioxide separates cleanly from the oil.

The resulting extract is naturally concentrated and rich in essential fatty acids, particularly linoleic and alpha-linolenic acids, alongside oleic acid and naturally occurring plant antioxidants. Sea buckthorn seed oil differs from the oil obtained from the fruit pulp, which has a markedly different fatty acid composition.

How AREUM Uses It

We use Certified Organic Sea Buckthorn CO₂ Extract in Grace Facial Oil, where it works alongside bakuchiol, rosehip, camellia, jojoba, meadowfoam, olive-derived squalane and vitamin E.

Although present in a small amount, it is one of Grace’s most concentrated botanical ingredients. It brings essential fatty acids, antioxidant care and a naturally warm golden hue to the formula, complementing the nourishing and restorative qualities of the complete oil blend.

Why AREUM Chose Sea Buckthorn CO₂ Extract

We chose a seed-derived CO₂ extract rather than a conventionally pressed sea buckthorn oil for its higher concentration, purity, and more carefully preserved botanical profile. Supercritical CO₂ extraction uses controlled temperatures and no conventional organic solvents, making it especially effective at capturing delicate oil-soluble compounds while allowing the carbon dioxide to fully separate from the final extract.

We specifically selected the seed oil because it is naturally rich in linoleic and alpha-linolenic acids, essential fatty acids that help support the skin’s lipid barrier. In Grace, its concentrated nature allows us to deliver these benefits effectively without compromising the formula’s silky texture or leaving the skin feeling heavy or overly rich.
