Origin
Squalane is a lightweight, highly stable emollient derived from squalene, a lipid found naturally in plants and also present in human sebum. The squalane used by AREUM is plant-derived, with sugar cane providing the renewable botanical source from which it is produced.
Through a carefully controlled production process, the plant-derived material is transformed into squalane — a clear, colourless and virtually odourless emollient prized for its exceptional stability and elegant skin feel. Unlike squalene, which is naturally prone to oxidation, squalane is highly stable, making it particularly well suited to refined skincare formulations.
How AREUM Uses It
We use sugar cane-derived squalane in Grace Facial Oil, where it forms the elegant foundation of the formula.
It works alongside jojoba, meadowfoam, rosehip, camellia and sea buckthorn oils, helping the blend glide effortlessly across the skin and settle into a silky, lightweight finish. Its refined texture balances the richness of the botanical oils, allowing Grace to feel deeply nourishing while remaining beautifully light and comfortable on the skin.
Why AREUM Chose Sugar Cane-Derived Squalane
We chose sugar cane-derived squalane for its exceptional skin compatibility, elegant sensory profile and high stability.
Squalene occurs naturally within the skin’s surface lipids, but in its original form it is highly susceptible to oxidation. Squalane offers many of the same desirable emollient qualities in a considerably more stable form, helping to soften the skin, support suppleness and reduce moisture loss without feeling heavy or greasy.
We specifically selected a plant-derived source rather than the historically used shark-derived alternative, in keeping with AREUM’s commitment to considered, plant-based ingredients. Within Grace, squalane also brings balance to the richer botanical oils, contributing to the smooth, refined texture and effortless application that define the formulation.
