Origin

Squalane is a lightweight, highly stable emollient derived from squalene, a lipid found naturally in plants and also present in human sebum. The squalane used by AREUM begins with plant-based squalene obtained from olives.

The squalene is purified and hydrogenated, a process that converts its unsaturated structure into the more stable, saturated form known as squalane. This creates a clear, colourless and virtually odourless oil that is far more resistant to oxidation than squalene.

How AREUM Uses It

We use Olive-Derived Squalane in Grace Facial Oil, where it forms the elegant foundation of the formula.

It works alongside jojoba, meadowfoam, rosehip, camellia and sea buckthorn oils, helping the blend spread effortlessly across the skin and absorb with a silky, lightweight finish. Its refined texture softens the richness of the botanical oils, allowing Grace to feel deeply nourishing without becoming overly heavy or greasy.

Why AREUM Chose Olive-Derived Squalane

We chose Olive-Derived Squalane for its combination of skin compatibility, sensory elegance and exceptional stability.

While squalene is naturally present in the skin’s surface lipids, it is vulnerable to oxidation. Converting it into squalane creates a more stable ingredient that retains its soft, emollient character while being better suited to a carefully formulated facial oil.

We specifically selected a plant-derived source rather than the shark-derived squalane historically used by the cosmetics industry. Olive-derived squalane offers the lightness and performance we wanted while reflecting AREUM’s preference for considered, plant-based ingredients.

Within Grace, it also provides an important counterbalance to richer and more delicate botanical oils. It helps create a formula that feels smooth, refined and comforting on the skin while supporting the stability of the complete blend.
